    Iraq, 1979. Deputy president Saddam Hussein overthrows president al-Bakr and orders his half-brother to initiate a bloody purge of the Ba-ath party leadership. Saddam himself executes his closest friend and ally as a show of strength. He takes his country into the Iran-Iraq war and begins an affair with a married school teacher. After narrowly surviving an assassination attempt, an entire city is razed in retribution.

Saddam broadcasts messages from his hideout, insisting Iraqi people resist the invaders, but the net is closing in on the dictator.
