Mart is lonely and bored in her new residence, until she meets her roommate. Janine urges Pierre to tell his mother about their emigration, but he finds an old letter that distracts him.
Mart and Dalena spend time with Simon and his strange friend - Dalena falls madly in love. Janine is emotional in front of Mart, the latter interpreting it as a sign for intervention.
The girls are planning a sneaky trip to Pretoria, but Dalena reckons she needs protection. Pierre and Janine's travel plans are put on a hold while Mother Mart reminisces about London.
Mart is worried about Dalena. Pierre and Janine realises that they have different opinions about raising a child and Mart has to make peace with a hard reality.
Mart helps Dalena with an adult decision as she frets for the worst. Pierre and Janine find a house that fits their budget, but it's accompanied by unforeseen conditions.
Mart dreams away Christmas time as Marlene tries to hide her worries about what's going on at the border. Pierre oversteps personal boundaries and puts Janine in a difficult position.
It's their final school year and Mart is impatiently waiting for Dalena in their new residence room. The realities of fatherhood is pushing Pierre to further delve into his past.
Dalena's absence tightens Suna and Mart's relationship, but Simon struggles to cope. Pierre tries to make peace with his mother, but she impulsively invites an old friend.
Suna organises a party and encourages Mart to enjoy it, but she can't stop thinking about Dalena. Pierre is astonished as Mart shares her stories.
Simon shares about the baby, but when Mart calls the house, Dalena is missing. Pierre and Janine's last day in Cape Town sends them on a final adventure.
- The disillusionment of Mart's forming years is intimately placed against the political backdrop of the late 70s, whilst an older Mart finds herself in a disillusionment of another kind.
