Iraq, 1979. Deputy president Saddam Hussein overthrows president al-Bakr and orders his half-brother to initiate a bloody purge of the Ba-ath party leadership. Saddam himself executes his closest friend and ally as a show of strength. He takes his country into the Iran-Iraq war and begins an affair with a married school teacher. After narrowly surviving an assassination attempt, an entire city is razed in retribution.
