When mysterious things start to happen, brigadier Rosa Scheffers suspects that there is more at play than ordinary crimes. She calls on sergeant Beatrice Mack and colonel Bas Koorts to investigate.
Emmie's jealous husband, Petrus, tries to convince the Starlings that she is not of sound mind. Bas doesn't believe him and a supernatural meeting at the ruins confirms his suspicions.
Beatrice befriends Rasheeda, who is on the verge of being put out of her house by developers. But Rasheeda has a guest from bygone days who won't be bossed around.
Bas and Beatrice investigates a fatal accident in the Karoo and discover that a mysterious hitchhiker caused many road fatalities in that area over the years. They dare to travel along the same route.
